The Ferrari 250 GTO is an icon of Prancing Horse style. It is also one of the best known and best loved cars of all time. It was the peak of design reached by the 250 GT racing models, even if it remained a car that could also be used on normal roads.
GTO stands for “Gran Turismo Omologata” (Tried and Tested Gran Turismo), an acronym that was so distinctive it was not used again until the unveiling of the Ferrari 288 GTO in 1984. The project was entrusted to the, then young, engineer Mauro Forghieri and the bodywork expert Sergio Scaglietti.
In fact, the bodywork was developed, not by a specific designer as was usually the case, but through a close collaboration between Bizzarrini and Scaglietti. The car has a particularly sleek profile with a compact, set-back cockpit and a panoramic windscreen, featuring a truncated tail.
