Luigi Chinetti convinced Enzo Ferrari to produce John Von Neumann’s proposal of a Spider designed for the California sun. This was an open version based on the 250 GT Berlinetta, and the idea was extremely successful.
The 250 California was produced in two separate series: a “long wheelbase” between 1958 and 1960, and a “short wheelbase” between 1960 and 1962.
The car was constructed mainly in sheet steel with aluminium doors and hoods. A few models were also made entirely of aluminium at the Scaglietti bodyshop.
